Rest in Peace, Peter and Pico June 9, 2007

Saturday morning- June 9, 2007, I woke up to find Peter under our pear tree. I knew instantly that our dear 8 year old rabbit had died in the night. It was perhaps the way he was lying. The drizzle matched my spirits as I took a plastic tray to the back yard. Imagine my horror when I discovered that he was attacked. His fur was ripped and left all around the pear tree. Rigor mortis had already set in when I carried him. I scrambled to find Pico, the 4 year old daughter bunny of Peter's. She was found on the opposite side of the back yard, suitably under three benches of dancing posies. I could barely speak when I saw our sweet Pico with her throat open.

Sadness never felt so heavy. Knowing that these timid pets didn't know how to defend themselves nor needed to fear any predators only made the morning's discovery that much more gruesome. I should've put them back into their cages. I had thought that they would enjoy their freedom now that summer has arrived. So many times, I had seen them sit right in the middle of the backyard in the morning after rubbing noses or chasing each other. But no more.

I learned an important lesson that day. I no longer look at cages are mere restrictions. They can be a place of protection against harm and danger. The only comfort I have felt was from having both of them go at the same time. Strange as that may seem, leaving one behind would only make it feel that much lonelier.

Myron is doing okay. We've held our guinea pig MoMo tightly the past week.

Sorry to hear about the tragic incident. Our heart reaches out to Tiki's parents. You can come and visit Tiki anytime as he is a complete mirror image of Peter your family member.

Shocking news! Can't imagine who would do such a thing like that to soft, cuddlesome friendly creatures.
It does remind us of the brevity of life and how we need to keep connecting with loved ones; more importantly to be sure where we go after we leave this planet earth. Shirley has the answer!

Shirley, I empathize with you. I had a bunny who died at the paws of a neighbors dog (that had escaped that day). I also felt that the freedom of the yard would be great fun for this bunny and I'm sure it was. My kids will never let me forget the image of seeing that dog in our backyard (they love dogs too) and then to find the still-warm body of "bunny". It is a fact and lesson of life--you can't hold on to anything too tightly. Just be happy that you are able to give joy and life and happiness to another - be it human or animal!

With a hug, Donna

Dear Myron & Shirley, It is so sad whenever something dies as we know that was not God's intention at creation. Reminds us not only of the brevity of life but also if sin's effects on this world. I wouldn't be surprised to see those bunnies in heaven. If there are going to be white horses, why not other critters too? God made them and He loves His creation so I think they'll be there too. I pray He will comfort you. Love, Molly

Dear Shirley & Myron,

Funny how our little pets become so precious to us. Enjoy your guinea pig. I have one as well - her name is Ochre (for her red fur) and she is 5 years old and still going strong. She has outlived my other 2 pigs who only lived 3 years each.

Blessings to you both,
Deborah

Dear Shirley and Myron
I'm sorry to hear about the death of your rabbits!
Yes, I remember them very well! I used to see them run around in your back yard while I'm enjoying the BBQ Satay!!!!
It's so sad that some evil monster has to do that to them!!
Well, I hope they are happy hoping in heaven. I know my dear cat ReFa will take care of them.
Someday when it's our time to go meet our heavenly father, we will meet them on the "Rainbow Bridge"......at least that's what I firmly believe.

Dear Myron and Shirley:

That is a very sad story. Our pets become part of our family and when things like this happen, we feel like part of our family is gone.
I pray God will encourage your hearts. All creation groans...

hugs,
Marie

Dearest Shirley and Myron,
I am so sorry that you had to go through that drama. It is one thing when the animals die naturally but when they have been killed so savagely it is aweful!!

Lots of love
